Step 2: Planning your Investigation

Planning your Grounds for Optimism investigation is a great way to make a positive start to team working and will lay the foundations for success.

Who do you need to talk to?

Before you begin planning you will first have to decide who you should to talk to as part of the investigation. For instance, there are the main day-to-day users of the site such as students, staff and parents but there are also many others who know the school site well, who care about it or have responsibility for it. These may include the governors, grounds maintenance contractor, the person or organisation who owns the school land, neighbours and the surrounding community.

Now would be a good time to refer back to the ‘relationships map’ or use the mapping relationships activity to complete one. Alternatively a team ’brainstorm’ could help you agree who needs to be involved in the grounds investigation at your school.

Once you have a general idea of who you need to talk to, the team planning activity suggests one way in which you could discuss, agree and plan what needs to be done, by who and when.
